Glasgow George Square Christmas market cancelled as organisers issue statement

This year's Christmas Market at George Square in Glasgow has been cancelled, just days after it announced it's return for 2021.

Market Place Europe, who has previously run the event, issued the update explaining they have had to cancel this year's upcoming event due to experiencing difficulties accessing the site.

The organisers issued a statement on social media stating that they were "unable to create a mutually agreeable plan for this venue" which has left residents disappointed that the market will once again not be going ahead.

The cancellation comes after there have been reports they had issues accessing the site due to this year's COP26 summit.

A spokesperson for Market Place Europe said: “The Glasgow Loves Christmas team explored every option with ourselves to make George Square market possible this Christmas.

"Unfortunately we haven’t been able to create a mutually agreeable plan for this venue."

The Christmas Market was just days away from beginning preparations after they announced last week that they would be returning with a new light show for the holiday season.

Glasgow City Council had just launched a brand new "love Glasgow This Christmas" campaign to announce the festive market's return.

A spectacular illumination was meant to be one of this year's market highlights, with other lighting programmes being added to other landmarks in the city.

This will be the second year that the Christmas market will not go ahead, following it's absence last year due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

It's not all bad news, however.

It has been confirmed that Christmas Market at St Enoch Square will still be going ahead for this year's festivities, which is sure to delight Christmas shoppers.

The spokesperson said: "We are pleased to say that the Christmas market in St Enoch Square will be open from 21st November until 23rd December.”

It has been confirmed that traders who were originally slated to appear at the George Square market have been offered space at the St Enoch location.
