Glasgow George Square Brexit protest as thousands stand against suspending parliament

Thousands of people have gathered in Glasgow standing against Boris Johnson's plans to suspend parliament to push through a no-deal Brexit.

Protesters with flags, banners and hand-made placards have flooded George Square as part of UK-wide demonstrations against the prorogation of Parliament.

The crowds are also calling for a general election.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is among the speakers, ending his three-day visit to Scotland.

We previously told how a legal bid to stop Boris Johnson's suspension plans were denied an interim interdict at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

A cross-party group of MPs and peers had filed a petition at Scotland's highest civil court in the capital aiming at stopping the Prime Minister being able to prorogue parliament.

They called for an interim interdict to halt prorogation until a final decision has been made on the case.

However, on Friday Judge Lord Doherty dismissed the action ahead of a full hearing which will now take place on Tuesday.

Demonstrators opposed to Brexit have planned more than 30 events across the UK this weekend as Johnson looks set for a torrid week in the Commons.

As he faces parliamentary attempts to legislate against a no-deal exit from the EU, or to hold a vote of confidence in his Government, the PM insisted opponents could be making the prospect of a withdrawal from the bloc without an agreement more likely.

Speaking from the event in George Square, Jeremy Corbyn said: "I'm proud to be here with all of you supporting that, to say to Boris Johnson no way, it's our Parliament.

"No way do you take us out without a deal - we will stop you and give the people their rights and their say to determine their future."

He said he is backing the protests all over the country, adding: "Demonstrations are taking place everywhere because people are angered and outraged about what is happening.

"Angered that the Government and a Prime Minister elected by 93,000 members of the Tory party is trying to hijack the needs, aims and aspirations of 65 million people.

"Well think on Boris, it's not on and we're not having it."
