Glasgow fury at 'shameful' demolition of 'world's oldest football building' at Lesser Hampden

Football fans have reacted with fury after a Glasgow building considered one of the oldest in the world related to the sport has been torn down.

Queen's Park's redevelopment of Lesser Hampden has spelled the end for the iconic 'farmhouse’ - which had been converted by the club into a pavilion and dressing room in the 1920s after they purchased a farm near Hampden Park to build a pitch and stands.

The farmhouse, which dates back to the 19th century, had lain empty since 2013 for safety reasons, and was believed by football historians to be the oldest existing football stadium building in the world.

We reported earlier this month on the controversial plans for it to be demolished, with the club issuing a statement explaining it was a "difficult decision" to tear down the building, which had "deteriorated significantly over time".

Online reports suggest the bulldozers flattened the building yesterday (December 17), with the news being greeted with strong disdain.

One person tweeted a picture of the farmhouse, with the caption: "Another piece of history demolished. The Farmhouse, thought to be the oldest football building in the world torn down. Why does Glasgow hate itself?"

And another, having tweeted: "Wait, the Farmhouse at Lesser Hampden was demolished today?!" followed it up with "The Farmhouse a 19th century building is widely believed to be the oldest building in world football. That’s a f***ing shambles."

They also called the decision to demolish the building "utterly insane, tragic in fact".

Another football fan commented: "You'd think they'd have wanted to preserve it. Having been in Lesser Hampden for games so often over the years, I genuinely can't believe that in this day and age, they've torn down such a historic football building. Shameful."
