Glasgow foodbank warns against coronavirus panic buys

A Glasgow foodbank has called for people to 'not panic buy' amid fears that hoarding food could have a devastating affect on hard-up families in the city.

Glasgow South West Foodbank admitted they were concerned that essential items, such as toilet roll, tinned food and pasta, were becoming more difficult to find in supermarkets.

Across the country, people have been seen buying multiple items due to coronavirus fears.

In Glasgow there have been empty shoppers stockpile hand cleaners, food and medicines.

But Nick Hopkins, chair of Glasgow South West Foodbank, says the voluntary organisation are working hard to make sure they can keep essentials in stock at their centres in Ibrox, Cardonald, Govan, Pollok and Mosspark.

There is concern that the more people stockpile goods for their own families, less thought will be given to local people in crisis who rely on foodbanks to survive.

He told Glasgow Live: "At the moment we’ve been able to get everything that we need, though we have had to buy from different stores to those we usually get goods from.

"We’re keeping an eye on the situation and are in close discussion with supermarkets so that we can continue to provide to people in need.

"The thing that would help us most is people not panic buying. Donations are holding up well at the moment and we are very grateful for that."

The number of cases of coronavirus in Scotland rose by five yesterday, taking the total number of Scots infected by the virus to 23.

There are currently five confirmed cases of coronavirus in Greater Glasgow.
