Glasgow foodbank urges public to donate mix of fresh, frozen and 'beige foods'

A Glasgow food bank has issued a call out for donations of fresh, frozen and 'beige foods', many of which are popular for children with additional support needs.

The Gowanbank Food Hub helps hundreds of families in the Pollok area of Glasgow – handing out food parcels and clothing as well as providing welfare advice and help to combat loneliness and isolation in the community.

The local emergency food aid provider, which operates from an office on Peat Road, was established after parents on the local school's parent council identified a need.

They have now issued a call out looking for donations for foods with which to make school lunches for children as term time resumes - in particular donations of chicken nuggets, fish fingers and potato shapes, proven to be popular with children who have autism as they are not visually overwhelming.

Dawn, manager of Gowanbank Food Hub, told Glasgow Live : "We are still trying to keep up the [cupboard] food donations, but we also have a freezer and are looking for foods for children with additional support needs who eat what other people call "beige foods" like chicken nuggets, fish fingers, chips, mini pizzas, potato shapes, sausages and things like that.

"We also don't get any fresh foods like milk, breads, fruits and veg. So we can also make sure the foods are nutritional and healthy. We have tried to get some from suppliers in the past but had no luck.

"Even also like cold meats so we can give them to families along with bread and other bits like fruit and crisps so parents can provide a nice lunch for the kids as well. We are all for making sure the kids eat nice food that they enjoy so they can engage better in school. As a nice full stomach means they can learn better."

Donations can be made to 415A-B Peat road, Glasgow G53 6SG on Wednesdays and Fridays between 9am and 2.30pm.
