Glasgow foodbank urges public to donate essential items as Christmas nears

A local Glasgow food bank has appealed for much-needed donations this year on the run up to Christmas and has urged the pubic to help out where they can.

The festive season can bring so much joy to many people, however for others, this season is a reminder of their struggles whether its mentally, physically or to do with their financial situation.

According to the Glasgow SE (South East) food bank, one in five people in the UK live below the poverty line and since last year, they have supplied 11,689 three-day emergency food supplies to people in crisis.

The Glasgow SE food bank, which opened in 2011, helps hundreds of families by handing out food parcel which can be adapted depending on dietary requirements.

They took to Twitter with the hashtag 'ChristmasAppeal' this year in a bid to provide more to those who need it. Taking to social media, the food bank asked for donations through money or essential items.

They also noted on their website that their "foodbank relies on your goodwill and support".

They add: "Over 90% of the food distributed by foodbanks in The Trussell Trust network is donated by the public – that’s why your food donations are absolutely vital to our ability to give everyone referred to us a balanced and nutritious three day supply of food."

Food and other essentials the Glasgow food bank are asking for include:

  • Long-life milk
  • Selection box
  • Diluting juice
  • Coffee
  • Tinned rice/custard
  • Shower gel
  • Shampoo
  • Razors and shaving foam
  • Tinned meat
  • Tined fish
  • Cooking Oil (1L bottles)
  • Tea bags
  • Coffee
  • Sweets/Chocolate

In a previous tweet, they also mentioned they were low on plastic bags - so if you ave any laying around - bring them in!

Please note that the food bank have said that they are "well stocked" with the following items:

  • Pasta
  • Pasta sauce
  • Beans
  • Soup

Donations can be made between 10am and 12pm Monday, Wednesday's and Friday's to Foodbank Distribution Centre, Glasgow Elim Church, 42 Inglefield Street, Govanhill, G42 7AT.
