Glasgow flight chaos as 'drunk' passenger 'began smoking and threatening staff'

Cabin crew pleaded with a pilot to divert a holiday flight from Glasgow to Turkey after a drunk passenger began smoking and threatened staff.

The captain rerouted the plane to the Hungarian capital Budapest, where the man was arrested.

The Thomas Cook flight was originally heading to Antalya after leaving Glasgow Airport at about 5pm on Friday.

Sources say the drama happened an hour into the journey when the passenger lit up a cigarette in the toilet.

Medical staff in Budapest boarded the plane in a bid to subdue him.

The flight eventually arrived in Turkey at 2am – almost two-and-a-half hours after the scheduled arrival time of 11.30pm.

A 67-year-old passenger, who asked not to be named, said: “He was bawling and shouting at everyone, lashing out at staff and had clearly been drinking.

“There were elderly people and young babies on the flight.

“His behaviour was a big concern to everyone.”

A spokesman for Thomas Cook said: “Flight MT111 from Glasgow to Antalya was forced to divert to Budapest due to a disruptive passenger onboard.

“The flight continued to Antalya after the passenger was removed and arrived with a delay of two hours and 20 minutes.

“Our customers’ safety is always our first priority and we’re very sorry for the delay and inconvenience caused.”
