Glasgow fire: Work begins on St Simon's Church steeple to 'make church safe' as spire is taken down

The frontage of St Simon's Catholic Church in Partick which was this morning ravaged by a ferocious blaze is currently being brought down.

Emergency services scrambled to the scene of the fire at 2.40am at Partick Bridge Street, which is believed to have started in the early hours of the morning.

While no one was injured, the fire has devastated the building, which was the oldest in Partick.

This morning, the front facade was still standing as firefighters fought against the blaze.

The stained glass window had already blown out amid the heat of the fire, and the roof had collapsed, yet the archway with the crucifix on top remained in place.

The spire has now been removed, and in video taken by Glasgow Live the steeple is being deconstructed brick by brick.

A source from Onestop Access said: "They're making it safe - taking away all the damage. That is the priority. A number of workers are at the scene with the assistance of a 51meter truck mount elevated platform making the building safe.

"As soon as the building is secure there will be a full investigation and then decisions will be made if demolition is in order."

There is no indication yet when evacuated neighbours will be permitted back into their properties.
