Glasgow family home's epic three-year renovation with incredible tree house views

There is a house on a hill in Glasgow with some of the city's best views - inside and out.

Arantza Elousa's two-storey extension offers breathtaking panoramic views of Glasgow stretching out all the way to the mountains.

Although her passion for interior design inspired her popular Instagram @homefunkyhome - with the house being featured on BBC Scotland's Home of the Year no less - she is adamant that this house is not a show home.

Indeed, the 1930s dwelling is a busy family home to Arantza, her husband, their daughter, son and the almost one-year-old Australian Labradoodle called Teddy Whisky.

Theirs is a tale for home renovation lovers, because when asked what changes they made, Arantza smiled and joked, "How much time have you got?"

As a matter of fact, the house was under renovation for three of the five years they have lived there.

Originally hailing from Barcelona, Arantza is a translator and linguist by trade who has lived in Scotland for nearly half her life.

"When we first started I had a baby who couldn't move around and by the end of it all he was running around the renovations," the 41-year-old remarked.

The couple renovated the home in stages while the family lived on-site throughout the process.

Situated in a conservation area, the house is spread over three floors with five bedrooms and five bathrooms to boot.

Arantza describes her style as 'modern traditional with a funky twist' that references her background and love for US designers Charles and Ray Eames.

The home's art and furniture are purposefully modern to offset the home's period features.

"Some rooms are Scandi, others like the office are more mid-century, and sometimes a nod to Barcelona like some hydraulic tiles."

As for the pops of colour, Arantza said, "Colour makes me happy so I chose the right shades for every space conscientiously."

"I don't believe in neutrals just for the sake of selling the property as a white canvas."

When it came to the refurbishment, the house was an epic project given that it sits on a slope and the property's dated and dark interior.

"When we renovated, we opened up the rooms and brought in lots of light to connect the indoors to the outdoors as it's very important for our well-being," she said.

The house was transformed into a versatile family home with an open plan layout, a task carried out by a team of architects and builders.

From electrics to plumbing, it needed extensive work to bring the interior up-to-date whilst adding modern amenities like underfloor heating and triple glazed windows.

The interior was gutted, although they kept most of the period features they could, like exposed cottage beams, cornices and panelling.

Outdoors is more the domain of Arantza's husband. The mature garden has been a labour of love as he's toiled away at landscaping it in all sorts of Scottish weather.

They loved the house's exterior and left it untouched, except for one unmissable detail - the modern two-storey extension and cantilevered terrace that brought the home into the 21st century.

"The idea was always to benefit from the panoramic views, so the focus was to bring the outside in and the inside out in all three levels," shared Arantza.

Although they had a few disasters along the way as the bespoke windows were a nightmare to fit, the end result was well worth it.

She said, "They were the most stressful bit of the renovation, but we use our dining room every day and it feels dreamy."

"The windows are over three metres high and very wide so it's very impactful. It feels like being on top of a tree house!"
