Glasgow families left 'crying and devastated' after everything they own goes up in flames in Pollokshields blaze

Families were 'devastated and crying' after a horror Glasgow tenement fire forced residents out of their homes last night, a charity worker has said.

We told how 15 families were left homeless after a huge blaze broke out at a tenement flat in McCulloch Street, in the Pollokshields area of the city yesterday.

Emergency crews raced to the scene after the alarm was raised shortly before 1.15pm.

Police later confirmed that 14 flats in the area were evacuated while roads in the area were closed off.

Tragically it has been confirmed today that a man has been found dead in the building after the blaze.

Local community space and charity, The Bowling Green, stepped up taking in the families while emergency accommodation was sorted.

Tabassum Niamat of the charity said that young children had been left 'in tears' after their toys had burned while a family of eight were now 'heartbroken'.

She said: "People have understandably been left totally devastated by this.

"There were so many young girls last night in uncontrollable tears just from the shock of everything that has happened to them.

"There was a family of eight who came to us and they are just heartbroken, and it is heartbreaking for us to see these people in such an awful situation.

"The building is just about a minute's walk to the Bowling Green and I actually live across the road from the building so we knew we had to do something to help.

"Many people were struggling to come to terms what had happened and still are I think.

"They were in unimaginable distress really, it was really tragic to see.

"So many people were crying and just trying to understand it all."

Dramatic pictures yesterday showed orange flames leaping into the sky from the tenement while smoke filled the air.

A huge response was launched with dozens of emergency vehicles including fire, police and ambulances in attendance at the incident as smoke could be spotted from miles away in the city.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and a probe into the circumstance surrounding the blaze has been launched.

Tabassum added that the inferno had brought out the best of the spirit of Glasgow, with the charity receiving more donations than it could handle after it appealed for people to come forward with household items to help.

She added: "We asked for donations to help out the people affected and were just blown away by the sheer generosity of the people in the community and all over the city.

"We had a family with two young children come to us and because they had to leave so quickly they had no nappies.

"Within an hour, they had absolutely everything they needed.

"Most of the families are now in emergency accommodation but we have donations still here to hand out.

"I think we really saw Glasgow come together to help and you do see that time and again."

She added in a heartfelt message on social media: "What a day this has been, my heart goes out to each and every person displaced by the fire in McCulloch Street across from my own building

"Living and working in Pollokshields (The Bowling Green) I was in a position to offer assistance and put a call out for help emergency clothing and food.

"Glasgow and our Pollokshields Community did not disappoint.

"I felt such immense pride and also humbled by events unfolding today. My colleagues and I worked tirelessly today as did all the emergency services and Southside Housing Association along with the Glasgow City Council.

"The Bowling Green was open for all the displaced families whilst they waited to be put in temporary accommodation.

"These families will need a lot of support and I'm certain we will all answer the call."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 1.30pm on Tuesday, 1 June, police were made aware of a fire at a flat on Lincluden Path, Glasgow.

"Emergency services attended and residents were evacuated from the building.

"The body of a man was found within a property.

"The cause of the fire is not yet known and a joint investigation between Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is ongoing."
