Glasgow doctor caught in child cancer lies charging £500 to train medics

A Glasgow paediatrican who wrongly diagnosed children with cancer to scare parents into paying for private treatment has been making money training other medics.

Dr Mina Chowdhury was found to have terrified three sets of parents into paying for private scans and tests at his Glasgow firm Mera Healthcare at a tribunal 17 months ago.

His behaviour was found to be "dishonest" and "financially motivated" by the Medical Practioners Tribunal Service (MPTS). It's yet to be confirmed whether he is fit to work as a doctor after an unusually lengthy adjournment.

In the meantime, the 45-year-old has been making money teaching life-saving skills to oblivious candidates from up and down the country, charging thousands of pounds per session, reports the Daily Record.

One medic, who attended a recent two-day training session in Glasgow fronted by the shamed doctor, said Chowdhury can train dozens of candidates at a time who pay more than £500 to be there.

They said: "I'm disgusted. There were no warnings about his ongoing tribunal.

"I only found out when I tried to leave a review online and the articles came up.

"This business is all about honesty and integrity. Afterwards I was questioning certain things he'd said. It's massively hypocritical.”

Chowdhury remains an employee of NHS Forth Valley but the tribunal relates to his private work between March 2017 and August 2017, when he was found to have created "an unwarranted sense of concern" among parents.

A spokeswoman for Manchester-based Advanced Life Support Group, the accreditor for the courses run in Glasgow, said: "The Advanced Life Support Group is aware of the findings of the MPTS tribunal and is awaiting the final judgment on Dr Chowdhury's fitness to practice.

"We will then take appropriate action based on that final outcome."

An MPTS spokeswoman said it planned to continue Chowdhury's case this month.

No explanation for the postponement was given.

Chowdhury did not respond to the request for comment.
