The Whisky Barrel launches a new NFT single malt collection

The Whisky Barrel has launched a single cask of Scotch whisky distilled at Glasgow Distillery, with a complete digital provenance certificate.

The non-fungible token (NFT) should securely transmit product information on a public ledger, helping collectors and connoisseurs alleviate the risk of investing in counterfeit whisky. Uniquely, this certificate is located directly on each individual bottle.

The Fife-based online whisky merchant is run by Alastair Brown and his brother Chris. They have applied blockchain technology to 299 bottles of a single cask of Scotch distilled at Glasgow Distillery.

However, the distillery has no affiliation with The Whisky Barrel and the cask was purchased on the secondary broker market.

Each bottle features a specially commissioned design commemorating famous Glaswegian landmarks and people.

Customers who purchase a bottle of Glasgow Distillery four year-old can claim the corresponding NFT, which can be stored in a digital wallet.

Developed in conjunction with Aberdeen-based tech start-up CD Corp, each certificate is minted on the Solana blockchain platform, chosen for its verified low-energy consumption.

"Blockchain technology has been designed to record virtually everything of value; perfectly suited for identifying genuine bottles of Scotch whisky," commented Alastair Brown. "The most common question we receive from customers is: how do I know the whiskies I want to buy are genuine?... well you don't.

"By applying blockchain technology to each individual bottle, we have alleviated this problem."

Today marks the release of the third bottling of The Whisky Barrel's blockchain Scotch whisky series. Owners of the these bottles are also granted membership to The Whisky Barrel Scotch Club hosted by Solsea.

The third release of The Whisky Barrel’s 15th anniversary digital provenance certificate series is a 2017 vintage lowland single malt. This modest yield of less than 300 bottles was minted on 9 June.
