Glasgow demo to demand better public transport in city amid COP26 free 'zonecard' furore

A demo is to take place in George Square during the COP26 summit to demand better public transport for Glaswegians.

The protest is to call on the Scottish Government, SPT and Glasgow City Council to work together to deliver the world-class, fully-integrated and affordable public transport network to help address the climate emergency.

Organisers Get Glasgow Moving, a grassroots public transport campaign founded in 2016 by locals, say it is something the city 'urgently needs'.

It comes amid widespread anger that Glasgow COP26 delegates have been gifted a city-wide transport smartcard that 'doesn't exist' for local residents.

All registered participants at the summit have received the smartcard - giving them free access to public transport to complete their journeys from their accommodation to the host venue, Glasgow's Scottish Event Campus (SEC), and vice-versa.

Among those to publicly criticise the move was Friends of the Earth Scotland, who said it was "outrageous" that delegates are getting to use a free, city-wide smartcard which is "streets ahead of any device available for residents who have to pay full fare".

The Demand Better Public Transport demo takes place on Wednesday, November 10.

Demonstrators are being asked to gather outside the City Chambers from 9am to 10am.
