Glasgow delivery rider uncovers hidden green oasis at heart of Merchant City

A few weeks ago Glasgow Live reported that a city delivery rider uncovered what they said felt like a 'secret city centre oasis' just a stone's throw away from Buchanan Street.

And now it looks like the city's very own Indiana Jones has done it again, this time stumbling upon a hidden horticultural sanctuary in the heart of Glasgow's Merchant City area.

The magical wee nook in question is Greyfriars Community Garden, located on a derelict piece of land on Shuttle Street across from High Street station and next to Strathclyde University.

The urban garden of a number of small raised bed allotments, which have been constructed using recyclable materials and contain a variety of vegetables, fruit and pollen-rich flowers.

Twitter user Glasgow Deliveroo Rider shared photos of the garden with the caption: "I stopped to point my phone over the fence at this dear green city centre place, Greyfriars Garden, off High Street at Shuttle Street, nature carrying on, oblivious during the months of lockdown.

Established in 2012, the garden is a private place for use by members of Greyfriars Garden Association, which is drawn from residents of Drygate, Merchant City and Trongate areas, and is occasionally open to public to visit - for example during Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival.

And what's more fascinating is that it is located on a site of much historical significance, on what was the location of a Franciscan Friary in medieval times, home to monks who, would you believe, were renowned for their orchard and vegetables as well as their care of the sick.

We'd love to have a wee wander around if we'd ever get the chance.

And we also wonder what magical wee place Indiana Jones will discover next!
