Glasgow dancers to hold George Square protest over adult entertainment licensing changes

Workers from Glasgow’s four adult entertainment venues will tomorrow converge in George Square to demonstrate against plans to change licensing laws for the city’s strip clubs.

The protest, organised by The Empowered Women Project, comes after a petition to save Glasgow’s adult entertainment industry was signed by over 1,000 people.

The petition opposed Glasgow City Council’s consultation on regarding whether or not strip clubs and adult entertainment venues should require their own unique licenses.

Currently adult entertainment venues which also serve alcohol are covered under the Licencing (Scotland) Act 2005.

The event page for tomorrow’s protest says that dancers once tried to avoid identifying themselves, but that now it was time to voice their concerns.

At the time of writing, there are 50 people confirmed attending, with a further 217 'interested' on Facebook.

The description reads: “As Glasgow City Council continue their public consultation, we want to demonstrate we don’t want to lose jobs! 10-15 years ago, dancers were anxious about “outing” themselves... right now, we have an obligation to use our voices to save jobs. There are 700 dancers in Scotland.

“Would an MP try to close a factory who employee 700 people without asking factory workers how they feel or what their working conditions are like? Absolutely not. Dress code is just whatever the hell you like but we would advise just your normal clothes!

“Bring a sign and let’s showcase our desire to keep the clubs open at George Square at midday!”

The Facebook event can be found here.
