Glasgow couple attacked by group in city centre 'for being goths'

A Glasgow woman has said she faces abuse daily for being a 'goth' and was even attacked in the city centre.

Lexie Jackson took to social media to describe a terrifying assault she and her partner faced on Friday night.

The 19-year-old said the abuse is a regular occurrence with the pair being spat at and having drinks thrown at them in recent weeks.

Police are investigating the most recent assault that unfolded on Mitchell Street around 11.30pm on Friday night.

The 19-year-old from Dalmuir said she was verbally abused by two men, with one making 'wrist-slitting' actions towards them before a physical altercation broke out.

She said one of the males attacked her partner, also 19, and her friends, one of whom was only 15-years-old. Lexie herself was also punched in the face.

The teen has said she's "terrified" to leave the house after a string of similar incidents.

She told Glasgow Live: "Both me and my partner experience verbal abuse every day about the way we look.

"Earlier in the week, we were waiting outside St Enoch's for our friend when a group of girls came up to us barking in our faces.

"We told them to leave us alone - we got spat on and a drink from McDonald's thrown over us.

"Two days later we were going into Asda in Clydebank to do our weekly food shop and a group of young boys shouted some nasty remarks, spat on us and we just ignored it."

After posting about her experience on social media, Lexie said she received a barrage of messages from people calling her a 'liar' and saying that she deserved to be attacked.

She added: "Every time we go out someone says something. We keep to ourselves every time and people go out of their way to say and do these things.

"Most of the time we don’t say anything and just roll our eyes but it’s happened so much recently we have started to defend ourselves."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Officers were called to reports of two people being assaulted on Mitchell Street, Glasgow at around 11.50pm on Friday, 15 April, 2022.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
