Glasgow cops swoop on large illegal gathering and issue fines

Three people have been charged after police swooped on a large illegal gathering in the heart of Glasgow.

Police Scotland were alerted to the gathering on York Place in the city centre at around 3.10am on Sunday.

Six police cars were spotted in the area as officers moved to disperse the crowd.

A number of people were also issued with fines for breaching current level three coronavirus restrictions in the Glasgow council area.

The number of fixed penalty notices handed out by the police remains unclear.

Inspector Colin MacLucas said: “We were called to a report of an illegal gathering at a property in York Street, Glasgow, around 3.10 am on Sunday, 13 December, 2020.

“Officers gave advice, the gathering was dispersed and a number of Fixed Penalty Notices issued. Three people were charged in connection with the incident and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

"We continue to ask people to take personal responsibility to do the right thing and remember the purpose of these measures is to aid the collective effort to protect the NHS and save lives by preventing the virus from spreading.

"Our officers will continue to engage with the public, explain the legislation and guidance, and encourage compliance. We will use enforcement as a last resort where there is a clear breach of the legislation."
