Glasgow COP26 road closures update amid concerns summit could overrun

Close contact is being maintained between the UN, the UK Government and Glasgow City Council amid suggestions that COP26 could finish later than planned - forcing road closures to be extended.

Despite the UN climate talks entering their final scheduled day today (November 12), discussions look set to overrun from their scheduled finish time of 6pm this evening as negotiators seek to secure an agreement to limit global warming.

Nicola Sturgeon also said she would not be surprised if negotiations ran on beyond the original deadline, telling Sky News that it is "not unusual at COP" for discussions to go beyond the original end date.

The council have confirmed that, as it stands, all road, footpath and cycleway closures in place for the summit will be lifted as planned on Monday (November 15) at 6am.

They also said that they "don’t anticipate that the existing arrangements will need to be extended."

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said, “All the relevant road, footpath and cycle way closures are in place until 06:00 on Monday 15 November. At this time, we don’t anticipate that the existing arrangements will need to be extended.

"The conference is organised by the United Nations and the UK Government and we are keeping in close touch with them in case the situation changes.”
