Glasgow COP26 road closures end as Clydeside Expressway and other key routes reopen

A number of roads that were shut down to facilitate COP26 have now reopened.

At the end of last week there had been fears road closures would need to be extended with the UN climate summit overrunning.

However, Glasgow City Council confirmed a number of key routes, including the Clydeside Expressway, Finnieston Street and the Clyde Arc have now reopened.

Dozens of streets across Glasgow, particularly in the west end and city centre, had to be closed during the conference as thousands of delegates descended on our city, causing disruption for residents.

On Friday, we reported close contact was being maintained between the UN, the UK Government and Glasgow City Council amid suggestions that COP26 could finish later than planned - forcing road closures to be extended.

The council tweeted this morning: "The Clydeside Expressway, Clyde Arc and Finnieston Street are now open. Thank you for helping keep Glasgow moving during COP26".

The UN climate talks overran by a day as negotiators worked towards an agreement to strengthen their emissions-cutting targets for 2030 by the end of next year, as well as accelerating efforts to "phase down" unabated coal and phasing out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies.
