Tribe travelling from deepest part of Amazon for COP26 need 'warmer clothing' donations

An appeal has been launched for winter clothing donations for delegates travelling to COP26 in Glasgow from the deepest part of the Amazon.

Members of the Sápara nation, an indigenous people native to the Amazon along the border of Ecuador and Peru, will make the lengthy and significant journey to the city to participate in the climate change talks alongside more than 30,000 others from 197 countries.

Having only been in contact with the outside world for the first time recently, the Sápara nation delegation will be participating in the Minga Indígena, the alternative summit of Indigenous Peoples during COP26.

They will be joined by elders, indigenous leaders and native groups from across the globe in Glasgow, many of whom who will never have experienced a climate like the Scottish winter.

Organisers of the alternative summit have taken to Instagram to launch the drive for clothing donations for the Gathering of Indigenous Peoples in Glasgow.

They put out a post which reads: "Dear Glaswegians! Minga Indígena delegates come from territories with milder temperatures, so please consider donating clothes that can protect them from the chilly weather in Glasgow, Scotland."

In particular, they are in need of jackets, wellies, waterproofs and other warm clothing.

The collection begins tomorrow (October 1) at coffee shop Short Long Black on Victoria Road in Govanhill and runs until Friday, October 18 - with donations preferred between 9am and 4pm.

Meanwhile, Minga Indígena have also put a call for volunteers who can help with production, communication and transportation for the delegates during COP26, you can find out more here.
