Scottish life expectancy in one city worst in UK as babies 'live 12 years less'

New research has named Glasgow's seven constituencies as the worst in the UK for life expectancy, while babies born in wealthy areas in London were expected to live the longest.

This is according to Health Equals, a coalition of 29 organisations, who are pushing to reduce medical inequalities. The group has analysed ONS data based on babies born this year to uncover the areas with the best and the worst life expectancies in the United Kingdom.

As reported by The Times, the 10 areas of the UK's 650 parliamentary constituencies that were found to have the lowest life expectancy all came from Scotland.

Glasgow has an average life expectancy of 76 years, a whole 12 years younger than the best area for life expectancy; Hampstead in London - where it is 88.

Glasgow made up the top spots for lowest life expectancy, while West Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde and Dundee West took joint-second at 77. The top-10 areas for life expectancy were all from England, led by Hampstead and Kilburn and including spots such Wimbledon, where expectancy is 86.5 years of age.

Carrie Hume, the head of Health Equals, told The Times: "Our members are diverse but carry the same message: the size of the UK’s life-expectancy gap is entirely preventable, but not enough attention is paid to how our health is shaped by our interactions with the world around us.

The health group boss called on politicians to 'take action' and 'create plans' to improve health opportunities across the country.

Poor housing, substandard education and poverty were cited as potential contributing factors towards the gap in life expectancies.

It comes after recent separate research found that the UK's life expectancy on average, while growing, is not keeping pace with other G7 nations. A report released last week warned that the UK is 'falling down the global ranks'.

One of the researchers, Dr Lucinda Hiam, of the University of Oxford and an honorary fellow at LSHTM, commented: "The rankings show that the only G7 country to do worse than the UK is the USA."
