Glasgow confirms 39 coronavirus cases as Scottish number soars to 153

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases continues to soar in Glasgow, with 39 now officially diagnosed.

The government announced the latest figures just minutes ago, with the Scottish figure rising to 153 - an increase of 32 on yesterday.

The news comes as a second Glasgow doctors' surgery confirmed they have been directly affected, with a middle-aged patient treated there last week testing positive.

Crookston Medical Centre will remain closed until Tuesday as a result.

Meanwhile at Possilpark surgery a member of staff was also diagnosed last week.

So far 4,240 tests have concluded, with 4,087 confirmed negative.

The latest figures come hours after the Scottish Government announced that GPs will start testing for the virus , but only in more serious cases or where patients have underlying health problems.

It is hoped the move can help track the bug as it sweeps across the country, helping to identify it's peak.

Greater Glasgow and Clyde continues to see the largest number of cases in Scotland, following by Lothian with 25.

The area breakdown is as follows:

Ayrshire and Arran 6

Borders 7

Fife 7

Forth Valley 10

Grampian 12

Greater Glasgow and Clyde 39

Highland 2

Lanarkshire 16

Lothian 28

Shetland 11

Tayside 15

The first death of a coronavirus patient in Scotland was confirmed on Friday.

The patient, who was being treated in hospital, was described as older and had underlying health conditions.

Glasgow University announced that three people have been diagnosed with coronavirus
