Glasgow confirms 1,200 new coronavirus cases since start of second lockdown

Glasgow has registered over 1,200 new cases of coronavirus since additional restrictions came into force barring households visits - representing nearly half of all cases in Scotland.

The new restrictions across the Glasgow area were introduced on September 2, with the measures now covering 1.75 million people in Glasgow City, East and West Dunbartonshire, North and South Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, and East Renfrewshire.

Since then, 1,218 new cases have been confirmed in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area and 505 in the NHS Lanarkshire area, with the Glasgow figures accounting for almost half of the Scottish total of 2,785.

The Glasgow figures mean that there have been more cases in the past 16 days than in the first month of the pandemic, when a total of 1,094 cases were reported between March 7 and April 7.

Local restrictions have been extended for another week, and will be reviewed again on Tuesday (September 22).

To date, 23,573 people have tested positive in Scotland for coronavirus, with 2,501 deaths.
