Glasgow commuters face morning train misery as services cancelled amid covid outbreaks

Scotland's rail networks are to be hit by further disruption this morning as dozens of staff are forced to isolate due to covid.

Scotrail confirmed they have seen a "sharp increase" in workers who have either tested positive for covid or who are self-isolating as a result of being in close contact with someone who has tested positive.

A spokesman told Glasgow Live that 50 staff members are currently isolating, compared with 38 the previous week.

Services, mainly across the central belt of Scotland, are being affected and customers are being advised to check their journeys before they turn up at a station to travel.

A statement read: "Like all businesses ScotRail is not immune to the impact of coronavirus on its staff, especially as the country is seeing a rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

"Due to this we have seen a sharp increase in the number of colleagues who have either tested positive for coronavirus or who are self-isolating as a result of being in close contact with someone who has tested positive."

David Ross, ScotRail Communications Director, said: “We’re sorry to our customers who are being inconvenienced as a result of an increase in the number of our staff self-isolating due to covid.

“We are working flat out to run a safe and reliable railway in difficult circumstances."
