Glasgow community representatives claim Baillieston has 'far too many takeaways'

Planning chiefs are set to decide whether a new takeaway can open in Baillieston – with community representatives claiming there are already too many.

Mohsin Haq has appealed against the council’s decision to refuse permission for the conversion of a shop at the corner of Scott Street and Main Street.

He believes his proposal would deal with an “eyesore” building.

But Baillieston Community Council and Cllr Elaine Ballantyne opposed the plans.

The council’s planning review committee will make a decision today.

Mr Haq’s plans were initially rejected in November, with council officers ruling the development would be detrimental to the area and to residential amenity.

But the developer stated in his appeal: “The unit has lay empty since March 2019, affecting the local populous negatively, serving as an eyesore.

“It’s an opportunity to increase the provision for the local populous.

“We feel this application has just been completely disregarded and not given enough thought.”

Cllr Ballantyne said Main Street has a “major overprovision of takeaways” and the proposal “would not be a welcome addition”.

“There are already 11 Chinese takeaways, six Indian food takeaways, four chip shops, one pizza outlet and two coffee shops all on Main Street,” she said.

Another takeaway would cause parking problems in the area, her objection added.

Stephen Love, from Baillieston Community Council, stated members would prefer to reduce the number of takeaways.

“It goes against health and well being and doesn’t help with obesity,” he added.

“Baillieston has far too many takeaways and certainly doesn’t need anymore.”
