Glasgow Commonwealth Games mural in Merchant City painted over

Glasgow residents have been left surprised after a popular mural was painted over in the Merchant City.

The Commonwealth Games mural depicting two badminton players has now been covered in white paint.

Located on the side of a residential property on Wilson Street, the art was introduced to the city as part of the promotional campaign for the Commonwealth Games and formed part of the city centre mural trail. It featured Scotland player Kieran Merrilees and was said to convey 'the speed of the game', as referenced on citycentremuraltrail.co.uk.

However, as shown in a picture shared by Glasgow Deliveroo Rider on Twitter today, the mural is no longer, prompting locals to voice their disappointment on social media.

One user said: "Why would someone do that? Ok if they are updating it to a new design, but to just white wash over it?"

Another added: "Oh. That's a real shame. It recalled happy memories of that part of the city during the Games."

A further comment read: "Oh no, that’s really horrible. It was such a nice legacy."

Earlier this evening, the Fearless Collective shared a picture of the covered mural with the words 'watch this space', prompting speculation they will be painting a new mural while in the city for COP26.

However, any new mural may only be visible for a limited amount of time, with the adjacent vacant Candleriggs site set to be developed in the coming months.

According to their website, The Fearless Collective was founded by artist Shilo Shiv Suleman in 2012 to create public art interventions with women and misrepresented communities across the world. You can follow them on Instagram here.

Other Commonwealth Games murals in the city include those near Partick train station which depict hockey, netball and rugby players.
