Glasgow comic Gary Faulds 'gutted' after Army reject bid to rejoin despite huge weight loss

Commedian Gary Faulds says he's "gutted" after being knock back by the Army.

The 33-year-old lost four stone after embarking on a gruelling health kick in a bid to sign up for the reservists.

But his ambition to rejoin the forces has been left in tatters after they rejected his application on health grounds.

The Springburn funny-man, who sold out the Amadillo just a year ago, had hoped to join the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry, the Sunday Mail reports.

The former full-time soldier was inspired to offer his services after a gig for the Scots Guards in Cyprus last year.

His weight dropped from 20 to 16 stones with a strict eating and exercise regime, including running and swimming.

He said: "It is the first time I've cried in years. I just need to focus on something else now. I wonder if the Foreign Legion are recruiting. It is unreal - I'm absolutely gutted.

"Why would you not want that life experience in the ranks? I'm not going to get bitter and will just have to move on.

Gary went all out to get fit and healthy (Daily Record)

"I went to Cyprus last year to do a gig. Seeing the troops, the camaraderie, the banter - all of that made me dead keen to sign up.

"Just a few weeks back, I was struggling to walk a couple of miles. Now I'm running five miles.

"I've been eating sensibly, training hard and it's paying off.

"I still aim to get as fit as I can. My goal weight is about 12 or 13st."

From age 17, Gary served eight years as an airtrooper with the Army Air Corps and completed a tour of Northern -Ireland.

He hoped to join Scotland's newest -combat regiment as a reservist.

A spokeswoman for the Army in Scotland said: "We are sorry to hear of Gary's disappointment.

"We can't comment on individual reasons but we hope Gary will still support the Army Reserves in other ways as he has done in the past."
