Glasgow Club gyms will still reopen in September despite Nicola Sturgeon date change

Glasgow Club gyms will not reopen early following today's Scottish Government's announcement that venues can open their doors earlier than initially planned.

At today's daily briefing, Nicola Sturgeon revealed the reopening date for gyms and swimming pools had been brought forward from September 14 to August 31.

Despite the news, however, Glasgow Life confirmed that their planned date of reopening on Monday, September 14 remains unchanged.

Speaking to Glasgow Live, a spokesperson explained that the decision had been made in order to ensure that all venues can reopen safely.

They said: “Our current schedule for the reopening of pools and indoor sports facilities is still based on ensuring Glasgow Life’s reopening plans for the estate remain deliverable by the Scottish Government’s indicative date of Monday 14 September.

“We’ve been working towards this schedule for several weeks and it’s important we take the time to ensure our venues reopen safely. We look forward to opening our first indoor sporting facilities as planned on 14 September, and welcoming back our Glasgow Club members.”

Today's announcement by Nicola Sturgeon came as it was confirmed that Scotland is to remain in phase three of lockdown, but a number of new easing measures have been introduced.

As well as bringing forward the gym and swimming pool reopening date, it was confirmed venues such as casinos, bingo halls, amusement arcades and bowling will be allowed to reopen from Monday August 24 with appropriate guidance in place. Driving lessons will also be able to resume.

At the briefing, the First Minister also set a tentative date of September 14 to allow more guests to attend weddings and funerals, with social distancing in place.
