Glasgow City Council take cheeky pop at Edinburgh cuisine amid Weetabix and beans debate

Glasgow City Council has earned plaudits among locals by having a cheeky dig at Edinburgh cuisine amid the intense debate surrounding Weetabix and beans.

The breakfast cereal makers horrified thousands across the nation yesterday by tweeting out a recipe suggestion that people ditch traditional toast with their beans in favour of Weetabix "for breakfast with a twist".

And such was the wave of condemnation that NHS UK remarked that the tweet "should come with a health warning", while UK intelligence and security agency GCHQ couldn't help delving into the hot topic by tweeting: "We found....... No intelligence."

The council then trumped the pair of them - and killed two birds with one stone in the process - by throwing their hat into the ring and slagging off the capital at the same time, tweeting: "Worst combo since salt and sauce. Don’t @ me."

The tweet brought a wave of responses with people both from Glasgow and in Edinburgh.

One Glaswegian wrote in response: "Yes Glasgow!! You tell Edinburgh right off for that abomination", and they were joined by someone who tweeted: "YAAAAAAS!".

While others seemed to take offence at the council for having a dig at the choice of chippy cuisine on the other side of the M8 by tweeting in response: "Here comes the battered Mars Bar brigade."

The funny thing is that despite it being synonymous with Edinburgh gastronomy, their self-styled 'world famous' chippy sauce is actually a Glaswegian creation - given the fact that it is made by Walter Black Foods in Cambuslang!
