Glasgow City Council reject plans to convert Possilpark's Brothers Bar into home

Glasgow City Council have rejected an application to convert the former Brothers Bar in Possilpark into a residential property.

In January, we reported on the proposal to convert the building into a home after the bar ceased trading.

The pub, previously known as the Bowman Bar, was advertised as a 'development opportunity' in June 2019.

Proposals were put forward for a residential conversion from class 3 to class 9 at the address, with a planning statement - provided by Andrew Bennie Planning Limited on behalf of Ms Gillian Hayer - indicating the intention "to form a single dwelling house".

The home would have included four bedrooms with two en-suites, an open plan living room and kitchen area, office/study, family bathroom and storage room.

However, the council this week knocked back the application, saying it was not in accordance with Glasgow City Council's development plan, while reasoning the plans were 'neither distinctive, nor safe and pleasant' and 'incongruous'.

The decision notice, issued on February 26, said: "The proposal was not considered to be in accordance with the Development Plan and there were no material considerations which outweighed the proposal's variance with the Development Plan.

"The proposal is contrary to CDP 1: The Placemaking Princple of the City Development Plan (adopted 2017) in that the proposed change of use to dwellinghouse would fail to meet the six qualities of place as defined in draft Scottish Planning Policy, and by Creating Places and Designing Streets.

"The proposal is neither distinctive, nor safe and pleasant in its design and would fail to provide a welcoming feature within the area. The development of the property for residential use would appear incongruous with the locale to the detriment of placemaking within the surrounding area."
