Glasgow City Council leader to meet with union reps to discuss future of Glasgow Life

Council leader Susan Aitken will meet with union reps over the future of Glasgow Life after Unison claimed “someone needs to take charge”.

Trade unions asked to meet with the leader, saying they have “no clear understanding of the strategic direction planned for Glasgow Life” and the impact on jobs and services.

A £100m financial guarantee from the council is allowing 90 community venues to reopen but many remain closed.

Some facilities are earmarked for community takeover, with groups able to enquire about running them through the People Make Glasgow Communities programme.

A spokesman for Unison said: “Glasgow Life senior officers are adopting a “passing the buck” approach on the funding issues, encouragement of community asset transfer and potential job cuts. Someone needs to take charge of this mess.

“We are also keen to understand how the Glasgow city government will implement the terms of the motion passed last week at the full council meeting, and what it really means for the re-opening of services and political oversight of Glasgow Life.”

At last week’s full council meeting, the city’s Labour group secured support from the Greens and the Tories to pass a motion which committed to re-opening all venues as soon as funding and Covid-19 guidance allows.

They agreed to send a letter to the Scottish Government “demanding further funding” to protect venues.

Archie Graham, Labour’s culture spokesman, said: “Communities rely on these local facilities. They are crucial to our city’s recovery from the pandemic.”

David McDonald, the chair of Glasgow Life and the depute council leader, emphasised the impact of the pandemic on the arms-length organisation’s income.

“All of that was lost practically overnight when our venues closed in March 2020. We don’t currently expect to see a return to that pre-Covid level for a number of years.”

In response to Unison’s comments, a council spokesman said: “Councillor Aitken has responded and a meeting is being arranged.”

At last week’s meeting, she said: “I have no doubt about the sincerity that Labour members and other opposition members have when they talk about how precious these venues are.

“We feel the same way, which is precisely why we have moved so quickly to put a support and rescue plan for Glasgow Life in place.

“We did not invent this pandemic and we cannot magic its impact away.”
