Glasgow city centre street blocked off by climate protestors causing traffic to grind to halt

Climate protestors have blocked a road outside of Glasgow Central station this afternoon.

Photos on social media show a group of activists, numbering about 100, standing on the road on Union Street close to the junction with Gordon Street.

One photo, shared on Twitter, shows the protestors on the street with buses stopped in the distance along with the caption: "Protestors holding up the traffic on Union Street".

Another person tweeted: "Jesus Christ. Just got into Glasgow and it's mental. Almost deafened by people protesting outside Central Station".

The tweet has been shared alongside photos showing protestors carrying banners and signs reading things like 'COP26, Where is the Global South?' and 'Another world is possible'.

It comes after protestors blocked off the King George V Bridge across the Clyde yesterday as around 100,000 took to the streets to march from Kelvingrove Park to Glasgow Green for a rally as part of The Global Day of Action for Climate Justice.

Police Scotland described yesterday's march and rally as the 'biggest protest in Police Scotland memory'.

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
