Glasgow city centre restaurant Mussel Inn which opened 20 years ago closes due to covid

A popular seafood restaurant in Glasgow's city centre has been forced to close its doors for good due to the effects of the pandemic.

Award-winning seafood eatery Mussel Inn first opened its doors 23 years ago in Edinburgh, coming to Glasgow in 2001 and operating from its Hope Street location.

In 2018, the restaurant celebrated its 20th anniversary by offering customers 1998 prices.

Today they announced they will no longer be keeping the Hope Street venue open due to the effects of the pandemic.

They wrote a tribute to their staff and said one day they hoped to return to the city.

The Edinburgh venue will remain open.

Bosses wrote: "It is with regret that we are closing Mussel Inn's Glasgow restaurant. Unfortunately we cannot continue to operate under the present circumstances.

"We would like to say a huge thank you to our customers both local and who travelled from afar and the many who came back again and again.

"A huge thanks also to our staff who always went above and beyond to deliver the excellent customer service our diners deserve.

"If the situation changes it is possible we may return to Glasgow. However, in the meantime Mussel Inn's Edinburgh restaurant remains open. We look forward to seeing you when restrictions are eased."

Fans of the eatery wrote touching tributes to the restaurants news.

Nicola Quinn added: "So upset to hear this. Loved trips with my nana we both loved coming in for a pot of mussels. Glasgow store will be sadly missed. Hope it can be opened again some day."

Derek Morrow wrote: "Awe gutted, loved it there, hope you reopen when things get better."

Cameron McMurdo wrote: "I am so sad to hear this news. It was a lovely friendly restaurant and the seafood was second to none. I remember the photographic exhibitions we use to arrange in conjunction with the restaurant. Great nights."
