WEEKLY screenings of some of the country’s best independent films and Hollywood cult classics are set to be shown at a Glasgow cinema in the lead-up to a festival celebrating Scotland’s filmmaking industry.
The Scottish Screenwriters Festival has announced it has partnered with the Showcase Cinema de Lux Glasgow in Coatbridge to showcase filmmakers taking part in this year’s event.
The cinema will show weekly Thursday evening screenings, starting July 16 and running until September 24, and aims to combine acclaimed international films with Scottish independent features.
Audiences will also get to meet some of the filmmakers with Q&A sessions held after some of the screenings, with the likes of All Quiet on the Western Front’s Lesley Paterson and The Queen's Gambit, Department Q and Minority Report writer Scott Frank confirmed to attend.
Maureen Hascoet, founder of the Scottish Screenwriters Festival, said the event has always been about “building community around storytelling”.
She added: “This partnership with Showcase allows us to extend that conversation beyond the festival itself, celebrating both internationally acclaimed writers and the incredible independent filmmaking happening across Scotland today.
“Our hope is that this becomes a lasting platform where Scottish audiences can discover Scottish films, meet the people who make them and continue building connections across our screen sector.”
Scottish independent features like Mercy Falls, Dick Dynamite, Welcome to G-Town, Grow, SuperTerranean, Electric Man and Lost at Christmas will all feature in the weekly screenings.
This year’s Scottish Screenwriters Festival will take place over two days on September 12 and 13 at the voco Grand Central, Glasgow.
The festival’s theme this year is centred around “Strong Ground” and aims to explore “purpose, resilience and creative courage in a rapidly changing screen industry”.
The festival will feature the likes of Frank and Paterson, along with Douglas Mackinnon, Ashley Storrie, Steven Cree, David Hayman, Jamie Roy and David McKie (Levy & McRae).
