Glasgow church fire: Man charged in connection with wilful fire-raising after Partick blaze

A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a wilful fire-raising at St Simon's Catholic Church in Partick.

Emergency crews were called to the 163-year-old church in Bridge Street at around 2.50am on Wednesday, 28 July, with 30 firefighters battling the blaze at its height.

The building's roof, interior, and upper walls all succumbed to the flames while a stained glass window installed in 2013 by the Parish Council has also been lost leading to fears that the remaining facade may have to be demolished.

Detective Inspector Kenny McDonald, Drumchapel CID, said: “We know this fire has been devastating and has caused much distress to the local and wider community. Along with our partners we will continue to support our communities.

“I would like to reassure the public that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and officers will continue to patrol the area."
