Glasgow charity Refuweegee hits out at 'scumbag' after van broken into at weekend

Glasgow charity Refuweegee has hit out after their van was broken into at the weekend.

Members of the team discovered the dashboard of the vehicle was switched on when they arrived at the car park on Monday morning. It emerged that the thief had used a screwdriver, pliers and a hammer in an attempt to break the ignition.

Founder Selina Hales branded the person responsible a "whole new level of scumbag" and said they will not be able to use their van until it is repaired.

In a video posted to social media, she said: "Today we arrived at the office to find that someone had broken into our van at the weekend and tried to start the van using a screwdriver, pliers and a hammer.

"We're p***ed to be honest. Stealing vans is crappy behaviour, period, but to steal from a van from a charity and to stop them being able to use it because it's now off the road takes a whole new level of scumbag.

"It's not like you can't tell its a charity van, its emblazoned with Refuweegee all over it. It's just a d*** move and we're really annoyed.

"They managed to switch the dashboard on so if you see the Refuweegee van out and about tonight, they will have successfully stolen it.

"In the meantime, send the team some love because that's needed after a day like today. We're p***ed."

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Officers received report of a break-in and attempted theft of a van on West George Street in Glasgow, which has happened between Friday, 1 April, and Monday, 4 April, 2022. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Founded in 2015, the charity provides a warm welcome refugees and asylum seekers and helps them integrate into the Glasgow community.
