Glasgow charity providing food parcels this Christmas as 'some people just can't afford to eat'

A Glasgow charity creating food parcels for families this Christmas has said the supplies can be the "difference between being able to eat or not amid the cost of living crisis.

Meadowpark Centre is based in the Dennistoun area of the city and has helped the local community for more than 40 years. This year, however, they are looking to extend the help they provide in order to reach as many people in need as possible.

The charity is asking for donations from members of the public, with contributions in the form of dried food, canned foods, cereals, and baby food/products most needed.

Project coordinator Aileen Wilson told Glasgow Live : "We’ve found an increase in people we would not expect that have had to rely on food parcels. Sometimes people just can’t afford to eat

"We do something like this on small scale every Christmas, but this year we want to extend it to as many as possible given how difficult this year has been.

"What we’ve done is opened our centre on Monday and Thursday afternoon for a couple hours for donations

"It can be the difference between being able to eat or not. I just had a message today from a single parent with five kids who is really struggling and we're of course going to help her out. It's a real life line for some people."

The centre has already seen support for the project with donations from AG Barrs, Morrisons, and Sainburys, and a local donation drop-off point will be available at the Centre on selected days from November 14.

A spokesperson for the charity said: "Meadowpark Centre has always strived tirelessly to help those in and around the Dennistoun area. Whether that be providing shelter, clothing, food, or a friend to talk too, the charity has always been focused on supporting people.

"This year we want to reach out beyond those who come through our doors. Right now no matter where you are or what you do, there is no escaping the shortages of food, utilities, and even the pound. That's why our volunteers have vouched to get as many food parcels as we physically can to those most in need with our festive project."

Meadowpark Centre will open for donation at 41 Meadow Park Street, Glasgow on Mondays and Thursdays from November 14 from 12pm until 2pm. Food parcels will be available for collection in the week before Christmas. With a home delivery for those unable to collect from the centre.
