Glasgow Central station: Proposals drawn up for major redevelopment to enhance passenger experience

Proposals have been drawn up for a major redevelopment project that will improve station staff facilities and enhance the passenger experience at Glasgow Central Station.

The plans, submitted by Network Rail to Glasgow City Council for approval, involve a refurbishment of retail and office space within the main concourse and at Caledonian Chambers.

The proposal seeks to reorganise the station’s concourse to create more desirable retail spaces within the station while consolidating services such as the British Transport Police office, the Avanti West Coast travel centre and passenger lounge facilities.

Meanwhile upgraded office opportunities will also be created in the currently underused spaces of Caledonian Chambers.

It is hoped that the new retail units, accessed direct from the concourse, "will create a much less disjointed service and more approachable, desirable facilities for passengers".

As part of the proposals, a new prayer room will be located to the rear of the existing ScotRail Customer Lounge, while renovation of the existing Burger King unit will take place to allow Avanti WestCoast to relocate to a more desirable location on the concourse.

A travel centre is also proposed for the area accessed directly from the concourse, while staff offices, mess facilities and an improved First-Class Lounge are to be located in the current vacant areas on the Union Street side of Caledonian Chambers.
