Glasgow Central incident: fire crews called in response to smoke in station's lower level

Fire crews have this morning been called to Glasgow Central, leading to the station's lower level being shut down and the closure of surrounding streets.

Scotrail earlier advised trains had been disrupted after a fire alarm was triggered within the station, and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received a call shortly before 9.30am in response to smoke coming from a lift motor room.

Two fire crews remain on the scene, however Scotrail have since advised all train services will be calling at the lower level station once more.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 9.29am on Friday, July 31 to reports of smoke from a lift motor room at Glasgow Central Low Level, Argyll Street, Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene, where crews remain in attendance.”

Glasgow City Council's Traffic and Control Management team (TRAFFCOM) had earlier advised: "Argyle Street has been closed to all traffic between Hope Street and Renfield Street. (Fire Brigade appliances are on site). Further Bulletins will be issued when more information is known."
