Glasgow carer went on foul-mouthed rant at distressed elderly woman

A foul-mouthed Glasgow carer has been given a warning after swearing at an elderly resident.

Darren Bonner was found to have acted in an abusive and aggressive manner while employed as a senior care assistant at Clarkston House Care Home in April 2020.

During a shift, he referred to one of the residents as a 'f****** b****' and when told by another resident to 'not push them' he told her to 'get to f***'.

While carrying out personal care for a woman who was already in state of distress, he shouted at her to 'shut up' repeatedly before telling her to 'shut the f*** up'.

When the woman told Bonner her personal care had already been carried out, he told her, 'no the f***** haven't'.

Bonner's behaviour caused distress not only to the resident but to his colleague and 'contributed to her decision not to return to work at the care service after having only worked there for one day'.

A report by the Scottish Social Services Council described his behaviour as 'emotionally abusive' and caused the resident 'emotional harm'.

Their report added: "It was abusive and aggressive, showing no regard for the welfare and dignity of the residents in your care. Your behaviour is particularly serious as BB was already in a state of distress when you shouted and swore at her.

"Social service workers are expected to treat people who use services with dignity and respect, including in communication about them and to them and to protect them from risk of harm. You repeatedly shouted and swore at residents in your care and used derogatory language to describe AA."

Bonner is reported to not have worked in care since the behaviour.

The SSSC placed a warning on his registration for a period of two years stating that the behaviour was 'unacceptable and should not happen again'.

He will have to undergo learning and training on various topics including professional conduct and communication.
