Glasgow carer home worker struck off for stealing cash from vulnerable resident

A has been struck off after stealing money from a vulnerable resident.

Ashley Monaghan claimed she was going through a hard time when she gave into temptation and pocketed the cash while working at Antonine House in Glasgow.

A  (SSSC) report revealed that Monaghan lifted the £30 in notes from the resident's bedroom and put it into her purse.

When the theft was discovered she initially denied any knowledge, however she eventually made a full confession.

In an email she later admitted: "I split with my partner of six years, I didn't know what I was thinking when I took the money, I know I shouldn't have taken the money, I know it was wrong."

The SSSC panel found that Monaghan's actions breached the code of conduct expected of workers in the .

The report pointed out that although Police Scotland opted to issue Monaghan with a caution rather than pursue a prosecution, her actions were unacceptable.

It explained: "You had breached this provision through abusing resident AA’s trust, taking money from her drawer and then trying to conceal this when asked about it by your employer.

"You abused someone in your care whom you knew to have money in her drawer which you then took.

"The definition of exploitation is the act of using someone unfairly for one’s own advantage, which is what you had done."

Ordering Monaghan's removal from the register, the SSSC added: "A reasonable member of the public would be shocked to hear of a social service worker stealing from a service user.

"A reasonable member of the public would be disappointed if the SSSC as regulator did not take appropriate action."
