Glasgow care home worker dies after contracting coronavirus following deaths of six residents

A Scots care worker has died after contracting coronavirus while working in a Glasgow care home.

The 64-year-old man was a long-standing employee at Wyndford Locks in Maryhill, where at least six residents have died and a number of staff have fallen ill.

He is believed to be a dad-of-six and suffered from diabetes but was otherwise 'fit and healthy', the Glasgow Times reports.

It is understood he died last week.

A spokesperson for HC-One care, which runs the home, said: "We are deeply saddened to confirm that a much-loved and long-standing colleague has sadly passed away from coronavirus.

“They will be fondly remembered for their great kindness, humour and dedication to our residents.

“They believed that residents deserved the very best in all things; a belief that shone through all their work and that was exemplified by their courage, compassion and selflessness throughout the coronavirus outbreak.

“They will be hugely missed by everyone Wyndford Locks, and all our thoughts and sympathies are with their family at this exceptionally difficult time.”

His death comes after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced a total of 11 Scots who worked for the NHS or the social care sector have died from coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

The FM revealed the figures at her daily press conference on Wednesday.

Six of those were NHS workers, five were social care staff.

The FM stressed that not all of those who passed away would have contracted the deadly bug in their work place.

She said that 'it is important to understand how many frontline workers are risking their lives' every day.

The FM also said that 'appropriate investigations into the circumstances' surrounding these deaths should take place, before sending her 'deepest condolences'.

It comes as Nicola Strugeon confirmed that as of yesterday, 1,415 people have now died of coronavirus in hospital in  Scotland, an increase of 83 deaths from Tuesday.
