Glasgow canal path reopens after 2 years as new £13.5m bridge nears completion

A section of the Forth & Clyde Canal towpath in North Glasgow will reopen today ahead of the completion of the new Stockingfield Bridge.

The 500m stretch of canal path from Stockingfield Junction to Ruchill Street has been closed for the past two years to allow construction of the iconic new active travel bridge - which is on schedule to open this autumn.

The £13.7m bridge, which features a curved design with a viewing platform, will connect the communities of Maryhill, Gilshochill and Ruchill for the first time since the waterway's opening in 1790.

It will also provide a continuous active travel route from Loch Lomond in the west via Bowling Harbour on the Forth & Clyde Canal to Edinburgh via the Union Canal.

Speaking when construction work began back in 2020, Catherine Topley chief executive Scottish Canals, said: “The future successful development of the communities of Maryhill, Ruchill and Gilshochill is dependent on access to services, facilities and employment, this new bridge will help open up access to all of these while significantly improving active travel options along the canal.

“This will be an iconic structure helping to attract people into the area while encouraging even more people to use the canal as a means of getting around the city.”

The area surrounding the towpath remains an active construction site for landscaping and a community led artwork project to continue.
