Glasgow burial ground to be play area for new housing development

A memorial will be installed on former Calton burial grounds which are set to be leased to a housing developer to be partly used as a play area.

Home Group in Scotland wants to take over the land as part of a scheme to provide social housing at Orr Street — with 80 homes planned.

It needs to deliver a “landscaped amenity area and equipped play area” and have been negotiating with the council over the former graveyard of St Mary’s Church.

Glasgow councillors will be asked to approve a 125 year lease at £1 per year when they meet on Thursday. There would be an initial payment of £103,250.

A council report states: “For the avoidance of doubt, it is intended that the burial grounds will not be disturbed as the works will only require a surface scrape of the land.

“The church has no records of the individuals buried on site, therefore families and relatives cannot be notified of proposals.

“In the event that human remains or related items are disturbed during the works, the developer has advised the council that there is a formal process to notify the church and relevant authorities.

“Any disturbed items would be re-interred adhering to the relevant guidance.”

The burial grounds have since been used as a blaes football pitch, but are now no longer used.

The exact specification and wording of the memorial will be agreed with the church, which has “been in a dialogue with the council since circa 2006 regarding the proposals”.

Planning consent for 80 homes, to be delivered in two phases of 40 each, is currently being finalised, but permission is dependent on the developer securing the land for a memorial garden, amenity area and a play area.

The council’s contracts and property committee agreed to officers entering into negotiations over the site at a meeting in April.
