Glasgow-bound plane forced to divert to Edinburgh after being unable to land

A passenger plane bound for Glasgow Airport was forced to divert to Edinburgh Airport last night after being unable to land.

According to flight records, flight BA1478 from London Heathrow, which took off at 9:03pm, was due to land in Glasgow at 10:20pm, but instead touched down around 50 miles away in Edinburgh a short time later.

Data from FlightRadar24 suggests that the plane attempted to land once at the airport, but was unable to do so due to wind gusts of around 50mph that battered Glasgow and the surrounding area last night.

The winds also look to have forced the pilots of two other planes into performing 'go arounds' at the airport, including a flight from La Rochelle.

One person tracking flight arrivals into Glasgow Airport tweeted: "3 go arounds, windy night at Glasgow airport", while another added: "Was wondering what’s going on I see BA1478 has diverted to EDI. Flew over my house really low which caught my attention."

FlightRadar24 data suggests that the Glasgow-bound plane from London Heathrow plane could have been due to travel back to Glasgow last night to complete the journey, but the flight was cancelled.

It is not known what arrangements were made to transfer the passengers to their final destination in Glasgow.

Glasgow Airport have been contacted for comment.
