Glasgow bouncer put clubber in chokehold outside Kushion nightclub

A bouncer was convicted of attacking a man at a nightclub.

Damian Lang, 41, grabbed hold and threw Gregor Reid, 23, to the ground at Kushion nightclub in Glasgow city centre on August 8, 2019.

The window cleaner was also put in a chokehold and restrained on the floor for 20 to 30 seconds during the struggle.

Lang was found guilty by a jury at Glasgow Sheriff Court of assaulting Mr Reid to his injury.

He was also convicted of the unlawful possession of a knife.

Mr Reid told jurors in evidence that he had been out with two friends.

He initially left the club before going back to look for them.

Mr Reid went up the wrong set of stairs when looking to leave for a second time where he found a locked gate.

He said: “I turned and came back down again.

“It was then I met a bouncer.”

Prosecutor Jacob Tomnay asked if Lang had said anything to him.

Mr Reid replied: “You made a mistake there.”

He added that he told Lang that he was on the way out of the nightclub before he was “grabbed.”

Mr Tomnay asked where.

He replied: “Across my arms or across my chest.

“I was trying to explain I was leaving anyway and he continued to hold on to me.”

Mr Reid agreed that he tried to struggle with Lang.

Mr Tomnay asked what happened when he walked towards the exit.

He replied: “It was at that point he put me in a chokehold.

“He strangled me from behind...for maybe between five to 10 seconds.

“He threw me to the ground and I hit my face off the ground.”

Mr Reid claimed Lang remained on top of him for “20 to 30 seconds.”

Mr Tomnay asked what happened after that.

He replied: “He was hitting me on the face with his radio on the right side four or five times.”

Lang's assault allegation included hitting Mr Reid with the radio but this was deleted from the jury's guilty verdict.

Mr Reid stated he felt “disorientated” when he got up and left the nightclub before contacting the police.

He claimed that he suffered a black eye, a burst lip, and a sore cheek.

Taylor Muir, defending, put it to Mr Reid that he refused to pay for drinks in the club and was asked to leave but he denied this.

The lawyer also suggested that it was Mr Reid who made the comment about making a mistake which he also refuted.

Mr Muir asked: “Is it not the case that you were under the influence of alcohol and you were not happy about being confronted by Mr Lang?”

Mr Reid replied: “Yes.”

Mr Muir said: “Is it fair to say you reacted to that by throwing your head and elbows towards him?”

Mr Reid responded: “No.”

Practical care nurse, Reid Cavendish, 22, told jurors that he witnessed the assault.

He stated that Lang was “over-aggressive” and that he recorded part of the incident on his phone as it “didn’t seem right.”

Sentence was deferred until next month for background reports by Sheriff Paul Crozier.

Lang, of the city’s King’s Park, was granted bail meantime.
