Glasgow-born Chelsea star Billy Gilmour named in Scotland under-21 squad

Billy Gilmour has been named in the Scotland under-21 squad for their upcoming fixtures against Croatia and Greece.

Many fans are hoping Steve Clarke will select 18-year-old Gilmour for the senior squad ahead of this month's crucial Euro 2020 play-off against Israel.

Harry Redknapp is the latest big name to lavish praise on former Rangers youth Gilmour, who has won consecutive man-of-the-match awards for Chelsea in recent days.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound, Redknapp said: "He's played against Liverpool. Then I thought to myself 'Will Frank (Lampard) play him against Everton?', but he played him again, and he'll play him next Saturday I'm sure.

"So I think he could cope, I mean why not get him in the squad?

"He's played against top opposition and he's been the best player. He's run the game.

"This young kid, I just love watching him play. I get so excited watching him.

"He has everything Frank had told me about him about a month ago.

"He said 'I've got a kid here Harry, you'd love him. He's absolutely brilliant.' And suddenly he's in the team and what a great start he's had.

"Let's hope it continues. I'm sure it will because he looks a level-headed boy. He looks a real great kid who wants to be a top footballer."

The full squad is yet to be named, and Gilmour's inclusion in the under-21 setup does not rule him out of contention for Steve Clarke's squad.

The under-21s face Croatia at Tynecastle on Friday March 27 and Greece at Theodoros Vardinoyannis Stadium on Tuesday March 31.
