Glasgow-born babies lives are 12 years shorter than those in wealthy parts of London

Babies who are born in Glasgow live for 12 years less than those in the wealthier parts of London.

A report has found that the life expectancy of Glaswegians is 76 whilst people in Westminister, North London, live until the age of 88.

Campaign group, Health Equals, say that the last decade of poor living conditions, substandard education and poverty have cut millions of lives short, according to The Times.

According to the study, 17 of the 20 lowest life expectancies in the UK were found in Scotland, with Glasgow’s seven constituencies making up the bottom of the table.

The report found the massive gap between regions were ‘entirely preventable’ and only getting worse, as the life expectancy gap has grown by two years over the last two decades.

The health campaign group believe that a child's birthplace could have a bigger impact on their life expectancy than 'behaviour or genetics'.

Health Equals are now calling on the Government to step in and reduce the life expectancy gap by establishing more green spaces, better transport links and better housing.

Carrie Hume, the head of Health Equals, said: "Our members are diverse but carry the same message: The size of the UK’s life-expectancy gap is entirely preventable, but not enough attention is paid to how our health is shaped by our interactions with the world around us.

"We’re calling on politicians to take action, doing more to understand what shapes our health and creating plans to improve our opportunities for good health."
