The discovery of a bomb threat in Glasgow today led to homes and businesses being evacuated, road closures and travel 'chaos' as Police Scotland continued to investigate the incident.
Officers rushed to Alexandra Park at 3.30pm on Thursday afternoon after a suspicious item was found inside a premises on Milnbank Street.
A cordon was put in place following the evacuation of local businesses and residents who evacuated with police escort.
Parts of the M8 were closed during rush hour due to the bomb threat as train and bus services also faced disruptions and delays.
What's happened with the bomb threat in Glasgow?
A report of a suspicious package in a building on Milnbank Street in Alexandra Parade was made to Police Scotland on Thursday afternoon.
Officers rushed to the area at 3:30pm and were later joined by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and fire services.
A Daily Record reporter at the scene heard police at the cordon telling locals that the 'possibly explosive' package is being examined.
Alexandra Palace residents and businesses evacuated
Local residents in Dennistoun were escorted from their homes by police and around 30 evacuated residents are gathered in Whitehill Secondary School in a makeshift emergency centre by Glasgow City Council.
Sources from the council estimate this number will rise as people continue to return to their homes tonight.
Their staff from arms-length body Cordia were called in to provide support and food while residents anxiously waited.
Police Scotland issue statement
Chief Inspector Scott Simpson said: "We were called around 3.30pm on Thursday, 27 January, 2022, to a report of a suspicious package found within a premises on Milnbank Street in Glasgow.
"Officers are in attendance and EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) have been contacted. The premises has been evacuated, a cordon has been put in place and the M8 has been closed between junction 14 and junction 15.
"The motorway is likely to be closed for a period of time so road users are advised to use alternative routes where possible."
The M8 closed as public transport disrupted
Parts of Scotland's busiest motorway were closed during rush hour due to the bomb threat.
Both ways of the M8 from J15 and J12 were closed from about 5pm, but reopened around 6:15pm as drivers faced congestion.
After the M8 reopened, Traffic Scotland asked motorists to "please be patient and expect delays".
Likewise, the cordoned off area in Alexandra Palace caused diversions to local buses and trains.
Police Scotland issue updated statement
In Police Scotland's most recent update, they confirmed: "Following our previous post, we can confirm the M8 motorway has now reopened.
"Officers are in attendance alongside EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) following the report of a suspicious package being found within a premises on Milnbank Street, Glasgow. A cordon will remain in place.
"We would like to thank members of the public for their patience."
Police deny link between bomb threat and nearby incident
Officers were then seen swarming the Tesco at Forge Retail Park.
Videos on social media show officers yelling at shoppers to "move" as a police helicopter can be heard above the scene.
Several police vehicles descended on the supermarket at around 7pm.
Police sources say the incident at the retail park is a separate incident with no connection to the nearby Dennistoun bomb scare.
Alexandra Parade re-opens
The cordon at Alexandra Parade has since been withdrawn.
Some local residents have also been allowed to re-enter their homes.
Police Scotland have been contacted for further comment on the nature of both incidents.
