Glasgow bin lorry driver filmed using phone behind the wheel

This is the moment a Glasgow bin lorry driver was caught using his phone while behind the wheel.

The council worker was snapped driving one-handed in the Tollcross area of the city on Thursday, March 28, leaving onlookers stunned.

The "irresponsible and dangerous" driver can be seen casually operating the massive vehicle through the residential street.

Glasgow City Council have launched an investigation into the incident.

A local passed footage of the incident to the council via social media writing: "Yesterday [Thursday] afternoon in Tollcross... completely irresponsible and dangerous.

"I had no reply yesterday [from Glasgow City Council] so felt I had to post it again. It gives me no pleasure in doing so, but these things need to be addressed."

Responding to the post, Glasgow City Council said: "We received this yesterday afternoon and have passed it onto the appropriate area for action."

When approached by the Record, a spokesman for the council added: "We are aware of the incident and are investigating."

Using a mobile phone behind the wheel can result in six penalty points on your licence and a £200 fine.

If the case is taken to court, using a phone while driving can result in a ban from driving and a maximum fine of £1000, or £2500 for drivers of lorries and buses.

In December 2014, six people died when a Glasgow City Council bin lorry ploughed through pedestrians on Queen Street in the city centre.

It was being driven by Harry Clarke who had blacked out at the wheel.

A fatal accident inquiry  into the incident heard Clarke lied repeatedly before the crash about his long history of fainting episodes.
